Dark Side of Norman, Oklahoma

Today has been a Flaming Lips kind of day. First at work my friend and work mate played a mix of the Lips all morning. It felt right. It’s been way too long since I’d heard “A Spoonful Weighs A Ton”. Then came some nuggets from At War With The Mystics, an album that divided quite a few fans(not me… I thought it was brilliant).

So when I got home tonight the first thing that came to my mind was the Lips ‘Dark Side’ cover album. What sounds like it could’ve been a real disaster of a project turned out to be quite brilliant. I got a chance to see them end a concert in 2011 with an encore of “Brain Damage”, and it was tasty for the ears.

What I love so much about this record is that they do it their own way, and don’t try to be a Floyd cover band. It’s skronky, dirty, and noisy, much like Embryonic which they made sort of side by side with this album.

I won’t bore you with any more gushing. Flaming Lips are a love ’em or hate ’em kind of band. You either made it to the end of this with a smile on your face, or you stopped at “Today has been a Flaming Lips kind of day”…regardless, I wish you well on this Thursday evening.
